How Torrent Throttling Hurts Ethical Torrent Users

Some ISPs have decided that instead of going after piracy or going after users who use an unfair amount of bandwidth, that they will just throttle all torrents. This means that instead of having a fast connection like one would normally, when on torrents the speeds are lowered significantly or even shut off entirely with interruptions to the connection. The problem with this is that it does not solve the real problem and only targets ethical users of torrents unfairly.

Many argue that Internet service providers need to throttle torrents because some use too much bandwidth. Whether one is using a torrent to hog bandwidth or other forms, a hog is a hog. Whether they are hogging with piracy or hogging with ethical uses, they are still hogging bandwidth. However, it seems that the solution needs to be a bandwidth solution like a cap as opposed to simply targeting all users of torrents.

Another problem is that many do use torrents for good purposes. Some sites have larger files that are available for download like the last 6 months of podcasts, Linux distributions, or other things. They are using torrents as a way of saving money on bandwidth. If twenty computers are sharing these files with the world, it saves on server costs and gives their users more simultaneous connections to the torrent than there would be to a server. In the end, without the use of torrents the same bandwidth will still be transmitted across the network, it just won't be via a torrent. The truth is, when people want large files, they will find a way of using that bandwidth since the file is something that is wanted.

Torrent is a great technology that is being targeted. Hopefully there will be a rational solution to allowing torrents in a world with bandwidth becoming more scarce since this technology does have quite a few practical applications for transmitting data across the Internet.

Recently, found out I've tons of duty to be done...especially this year.

First, lack of schedule
Second, flooded of community projects
Third, need to study algorithm for my NP complete problems of task queuing..it's better call it like that rather than time management.

Main point, is community stuff, I mean, time is needed to hack on community projects.
currently there's 2 community project in hands, which is a time-consuming for amateur:

2.MYCLUG

recently there's some activities needed me to pick up some web developing stuff for MYCLUG, it take much time for non-fulltime developer to figure it out.

It's time to kick some badass...and have to stop roaming on world of 2.0.

Dear Uncle Sam:

Apparently the United States is having some issues with its “cyber command” effort. This is my way of helping you out and contributing to your so-called “home front”. I believe the following dissertation generally reflects the current stance of my community in regard to your troubles. When I say community I am referring to hackers, the modern alchemists, wizards, and artists whose fore-bearers built this great nation of technology you now stand and rely upon.

You make everything we are interested in illegal. As a result we are forced to be criminals if we want to learn the particular set of survival traits, commonly known as hacking. Sure there are “white hats” out there who possess the knowledge and skill to stop the types of attacks they, themselves, can come up with. They will happily work for you and do whatever you tell them. However, while you are sheltered within your own personal paradigmal bubble where all the children play nicely, the real world, 2.0 perhaps, awaits you outside. Out here in the real world you have been giving us the shaft in every way shape and form possible to discourage others from becoming like us.

You didn’t want more of us. You didn’t want us to do what we know is right. You wanted to use us as a resource or a munition. You make the things we are interested in illegal so those of us who chose to learn any way are under your theoretical control. We’re legally criminals so we must comply with you and do as you like or we will go to jail.

Now that you have exhausted your arsenal of fear, uncertainty, and doubt, you’ve come to realize you have some very troubling issues, the least of which is that your aging titanic, system of information exchange is at once your greatest strength and most needed crutch.

I know you like the bottom line, so I’ll state it here in a language you can understand: We are pretty angry about how you have treated us over the last few decades, especially since September 11 of 2001. You have made our culture illegal. Now you want us to help you. You want us to conform to your standards and ways of living, thinking, and acting so we can protect you from the machinations of foreign minds.

Do you really feel that we have any obligation or incentive to do such a thing? It benefits us in no tangible way to help you solve your mess. The more time goes on, the less and less we actually need or have any use for you.
Is it so hard to approach us with the same respect and dignity you would any other nation? After all, while we may not technically own land or have an army, we are a force you know must be reckoned with. If you would approach us as you do other nations when you are in need perhaps we would feel better about exporting our natural resources: the knowledge necessary to correctly and securely provide and maintain the infrastructure you use for… well, just about everything.

I shall let this writ float along the aether, and perhaps some day, some way, it will reach some one who can do simple math.

In parting, I must give you a brief history lesson; a reminder really: This war will be no different than every other war waged with wizards.

Gathering

3rd day of CNY, and I'm still got some unattended gathering session.
Gathering of old school friends are getting 'cooler',I mean, enthusiasm decreased.

As time goes on, I found out the more fact the world works, the more distance I've among the people and friends.
People thirst of knowledge flocks together. And doing something for experiment.

That's what I enjoyed.
The fact you know more, I more you suffered.

人们谈论起 Sun，总要说起这家伟大公司曾经的辉煌。Solaris、Java、SPARC、NFS......

很多人知道 Sun 是 Stanford University Network 的缩写，不过 Sun 的创始人并不全来自斯坦福大学，虽说 Vinod Khosla 、Andy Bechtolsheim 与 Scott McNealy 三个斯坦福的毕业生是 Sun 的发起人，稍后加入的 Bill Joy 大神则来自伯克利，他尽管不是发起人，但也是公司创始人。对于创始人中的 Andy Bechtolsheim ，必须要多说一嘴，多年之后，是他给了 Google 两位年轻的创始人第一笔 10 万美元的天使投资。

二月创建的公司，当年七月份就已经盈利，这是因为 Andy Bechtolsheim 在成立公司之前就已经设计处了 Sun 的第一代工作站。Sun 工作站在当时可以说无敌于业界，十余年间就卖掉了 1 百万套。而到了 1995 年 Java 推出的时候，简直让业界疯狂，我还记得当初的报纸写到"几乎一夜之间互联网动了起来"，这是 Sun 对业界最大的贡献。尽管 Sun 的品牌在将来或许消失，但是 Java 仍将继续改变这个世界。

公司创建四年之后成功 IPO，股票代码 SUNW ，最早代表 Sun Workstations ，这是 SUN 早期现金牛产品，后来解释为 Sun Worldwide，而到了 2007 年，则更改为 JAVA。这个更迭多少意味着 Sun 的无奈。Solaris 工作站已是明日黄花。在第一波互联网泡沫破灭前，Sun 市值一度超过 2000 亿美金，这是个惊人的数字。互联网上运行的服务器有 35% 跑在 Sun 的服务器上。彼时，Sun 自诩 "We are the dot in the .com"，可惜 Sun 后来的志向 "We're the Dot in Web 2.0" 未能实现，壮志未酬。

除却 Java 之外，Sun 在其它方面的产品创新几乎都有 Bill Joy 的功劳(其实 Java 项目也有他的推动)，这位号称在一个周末重写 BSD 内核的大神，在 Unix 操作系统领域带来惊人的成就，对业界产生无与伦比的影响，甚至他一个周末写就的编辑器 vi 都是很多 Unix 用户离不开的工具。Bill Joy 在 2003 年从 Sun 出走(据说与麦克尼利不和)，他的离去给 Sun 蒙上了一层阴影，从此后，Sun 在 Unix 方面鲜有有创新(这几年数来数去也只有 ZFS 算有点影响力了)。Bill Joy 在离开 Sun 之后转投纳米技术、机器人学等领域，在软件技术方面未有大的动作，但说不定这天才什么时候杀个回马枪呢。

Sun 创造了 Java ，却无法从这个金矿上赚钱。以往的分析往往认为 Sun 卖硬件卖得太舒服了，没能够及时转型。这倒的确是很重要的一方面。而另一方面是开源社区(甚至 IBM )都比 Sun 更能赢得用户的心。而 IBM ，更是抛出了 Eclipse(日蚀)项目以及后来联合其它公司成立了 Eclipse 基金，这实际上是用免费策略断了任何公司想在 Java IDE 上盈利的念头(当然主要针对 Sun)。Sun 在硬件服务器领域和 IBM 争夺市场，而 IBM 则在 Java 上断了 Sun 的后路，除此之外，IBM 亦大力扶植 Linux，甚至鼓励用户将大型机迁移到 Linux 环境下，一方面节约遗留系统维护成本，一方面硬件照卖，这是很高明的一招。

反观 Sun ，在 Linux 渐成燎原之势的时候，应对战略相当的失误，与 IBM 拥抱开源截然不同的是，Sun 采取冷眼旁观。等到 Jonathan Schwartz 主政时期，力主推出 OpenSolaris 策略虽说是一步好棋，但是时过境迁，为时晚矣。试想如果在 Linux 崭露头脚的时候，Solaris 就能够开源或者是 Sun 能援助一臂之力，那说不定就是另一番天地了。

Sun 在收购策略上一直是走弥补硬件产品线的策略，大多数收购并不成功，收购 StorageTek 花费的 41亿美元似乎是绝对的赔本买卖。收购 MySQL 虽说被业界看好，甚至 Jonathan Schwartz 称收购 Sun 是"现代软件史上最重要的并购案"，可没想到仅仅一年的时间，Sun 自己也被卖掉。到现在，MySQL 仍前途未卜。

说起 Sun ，当然绕不开执掌 Sun 帅印长达 22 年之久的斯科特·麦克尼利(Scott Mcnealy)。Sun 成也麦克尼利，败也麦克尼利，说到底，他毕竟是一个商人，一个刚愎自用的商人，对于 IT 大势的判断仍然比盖茨差几个段位。Sun 的四位创始人当中，他其实是没有任何技术背景的。"网络就是计算机" 据说并不是他提出的想法，而是 Sun 的第五位员工的灵光乍现。麦克尼利给中国用户的更多印象是对微软的抵制和对盖茨的敌意，这一点倒是和拉里埃利森是一路人。一个人成功的时候，大家看到的都是他的光环；一旦失败，大家都会去指责他的缺点。

Yet another week.
Things keep changing.

Today attending first meeting for Hackerspace KL.
Some are famous speakers in HITB conference.

For those works in IT security field should know HITB provides latest materials,
and also quite expensive to attend that conference...it take thousands of USD.

Main issue for first meeting is about society registration to government.
Other than that, is the basic fees and utilities to maintain the Hackerspace.

I think I'm gonna involve in it.
And also have to cut off some of my activities expenses so I can help to maintaining Hackerspace.

M : There is no point that new technology is slower. New should be better than old.

Alright, something attracted me to blogging again.
This time is about MLM, I may get snipered at street by those folk who work in this industry.
But this can't stopping me to talk. I strives for freedom and truth.

There's quite a period I do some study on MLM. Most of MLM fellows can explain this in math to proof themselves. So far I never see any of those guy to explain it with math, maybe they have problem on understanding math, or maybe they are leading by deception and ignored the truth.

To be the top 5% bloodsucker still need a strong skill and luck, and this is not my game coz I'm not gonna to foul my finger. Skill is 2-edge sword.

6.山洪瀑发，常有行洪道，要向其两侧避开。

Solving this issue wasted my whole Saturday!

I think many of Ubuntu user facing problem on resolution problem:
unable to set the display to higher resolution.

I found this setting on xorg.conf works for me:

1. In terminal:
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

2.Edit the xorg based on your Monitor/LCD and VGA settings:

installation problem on ubuntu 8.04

after upgrading ubuntu 7.04 to 8.04,there is some problem on installing firefox plugin:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

after google for it, got the solution

the solution was highlighted in red,here is the terminal command:

lsc@lsc-desktop:~$ dpkg --configure -a
dpkg: requested operation requires superuser privilege
lsc@lsc-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
[sudo] password for lsc:
Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ...
